Sports Update for Feb. 27

Men’s basketball takes second place in conference tournament

The Virginia Peninsula Community College men’s basketball, seeded third in the conference tournament, lost to top-seed and host Apprentice 64-52 on Feb. 26 in the championship game.

Quishan Brevard led the Gators, who won the New South Athletic Conference tournament last year, with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jhalen Harris added 16 points.

The Builders, who led 26-19 at halftime, went 3-0 against the Gators this season.

In the first round of the conference tournament, the Gators downed sixth-seeded Christendom 79-60 on Feb. 23 at Warwick High School. Harris had 21 points, and Javion Majette 20. Brevard had 12 points and 10 assists.

Two days later, VPCC got 16 points each from Harris, Brevard, and Majette in a 70-63 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian in a game played at Apprentice. Majette added 14 rebounds, and Harris had six rebounds and six assists. Mekhi Reid had 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Gators had a number of players honored when the conference awards were announced. Majette was named to the first team, Keshaun Johnson the second team, and Brevard and Harris received honorable mention recognition.

Baseball has tough week  

The baseball team had three games last week, all against Paul D. Camp and all losses. The first game was an 8-0 road loss Feb. 25. The next day, the series switched to War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, with the Gators falling 10-2 and 5-1.

In Saturday’s game, Michael Adams and Joey Williams had two hits apiece.

This week, they play March 1 at Christendom (a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.); March 4 vs. Rockingham CC (doubleheader at War Memorial at noon), and March 5 vs. Rockingham (a nine-inning game  at War Memorial at noon).
